Glossary · Sentence fluency
What is sentence variety?
Sentence variety is mixing short, long, simple and complex sentences so your writing has rhythm instead of a flat, repetitive beat.
Sentence variety means not building every sentence the same way. You vary length (a short sentence lands hard after a long one), structure (simple, compound, complex), and openings (not always starting with the subject). The result is rhythm: writing that's a pleasure to read aloud.
A page of sentences that all start “The…” and run to the same length feels monotonous, however correct it is. Controlled variety is a mark of a confident writer.
How markers see it
“Varied, controlled sentence structure” appears directly in selective and IELTS-style criteria.
